What is cubism Cubism is an early 20th-century style and movement in art, esp. painting, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and, later, collages. Some different types of cubism are painting something in a way that it looks like shattered glass.
When did it start? The first paintings in the style we call analytical cubism were painted in 1908 by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. They changed their style into synthetically cubism in 1912-1915. Other artists painted in styles that may be seen as cubism until about 1925.
