Plot Size • The objective of the sampling design is to obtain a sample of approximately 90 living commercial and non-commercial trees with a diameter at breast height > 4.0 cm. • A subplot centred in the main plot is used to sample approximately 20 commercial trees less than the tagging limit. • You cannot change plot or subplot area.

  8. Sample Maintenance • Centre stake flagged and cairn renewed. If stake is missing or out of ground triangulate location from plot reference trees. • Replace any dead plot reference trees • Confirm slope corrected plot perimeter • Flag perimeter for tagging sectors • String sample for site sectors • Pull nails on plaques and tree tags to allow for growth • Confirm plot attributes (crown closure, slope, aspect, elevation, slope position, damage)

Tree Measurements • The data must be captured digitally in the field with an Electronic Field Recorder (EFR) using GyHost/GyHand software • Species (commercial and non-commercial) • DBH (for plot trees) >4.0 cm at 1.3 meters (Uphill side) • Tree Class (pathological indicators and their position) • Crown class (position in the crown relative to other trees)

  15. Tree Measurements • Live crown length (contiguous live crown) 10% to 100% in 10% increments • Sectors (tagging, site and centre) • Stumps ‘O’ or ‘N’ • Damage Agents and Severity (tree and sample) • Suitable for height?

  16. Dead Tree Measurement • Not previously tagged but >10.0 cm dbh standing and >1.3m in height. Tag, measure DBH and classify dead tree attributes • Previously tagged living at last measure. Measure DBH and classify dead tree attributes • Previously tagged dead at last measure (tree class 3,4)and > 10 cm dbh • Classify dead tree attributes or • (F) if tree not found

  18. What is a Dead Tree? • Any tree with one or more green needles is considered alive • Bark may or may not appear to be alive Note: Use tree comments for questionable trees!

The Subplot • Always use the previous measurement subplot • It was a circular plot centred on the plot stake ranging from 0.002 ha (2.52 m radius) to maximum of the full plot area. • For trees 2.0 cm to 3.9 cm in DBH tag and classify as in plot • For trees under 2.0 cm in DBH do a dot count by species and “class” 0.3 to 1.3 m in height [D Class = 0] 0.1 to 1.9 cm in DBH [D Class = 1]

Age Sample Trees • ‘Top height tree’ from SIBEC centre subplot and from centre plot of three plot samples. • Site Trees • New age not required if tree age previously measured • In complex stands - two more from younger trees • Confirm veteran age • Save cores in labelled straw (sample + tree number) • Want 2 cores per species to have pith • Measure 5, 10, 20 radial increment • Assess for suppression • Estimate age for rotten cores • Count/confirm ages in office with magnification

  33. Before You Go… • Run verification to ensure sample is complete • Ensure non-verifiable sample data is completed • Remove all string and garbage • Renew tie line flagging and paint • Confirm access, tie point and tie line information and update as required
