What is creativity? «Human creativity is something of a mystery, not to say a paradox. One new idea may be creative, while another is merely new. What’s the difference? And how is creativity possible?» The creative mind,Margaret A. Boden 1990, 2004 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Creativity is.. the ability to come up with ideas or artefacts that are new, surprising and valuable. ‘Ideas’ here include concepts, poems, musical compositions, scientific theories, cookery recipes, choreography, jokes, and so on. ‘Artefacts’ include paintings, sculptures, steam engines, vacuum cleaners, pottery, origami, penny whistles, and many other things you can name. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning

What is Computational Creativity? Software capable of human-level creativity – with no (or limited) human intervention But also, the design of software that enhances human creativity (without necessarily being creative itself) 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
How to measure Creativity? Domain Specific Metrics But also.. • Novelty difference e.g.. picbreeder.org • Impressiveness rarity and recreation effort e.g. image generation • Value usefulness 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
The C2Learn Project It’s about Co-creativity • Human - Human • Human - Machine • Machine - Machine supported by Computational Tools via Gaming 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Techniques fostering Creativity • Random Stimulus The main principle of this technique is the introduction of a foreign conceptual element with the purpose of disrupting preconceived notions and habitual patterns of thought. • Randomness • Re-conceptualization Re-conceptualization involves the use of already established solutions and ideas in new environments. The familiar features of the established solution/ idea will re-inscribe themselves on the unfamiliar environment or appear in a new light. • … 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning

User Feedback on Computational Tools The first release of the Computational Tools Palette is available from: Win32: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ebgkei4o4cp4tue/CTP.zip OSX: https://www.dropbox.com/s/s06zpk8py1371ji/CTP.zip The scenarios produced (5 total) were then presented. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Workshop on Computational Tools Design (1/2) • C2Learn project workshop • Held in EllinogermanikiAgogi premises, on the 27thMarch 2013 • Five groups of 2-3 people (13 participants in total, 11 invited experts and 2 researchers from EA) were asked to collaboratively use a mockup version of the following tools: Random Word Generator, Image Finder, Search Engine Wrapper, and Summary Clustering. • Each group defined an educational scenario utilizing the mockup tools, targeting K12 learners. • The scenarios produced (5 total) were then presented. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Workshop on Computational Tools Design (2/2) The main conclusions: • all provided computational tools could be used by the participated groups in the process of designing a creative educational scenario. • moreover, other –not originally foreseen – tools, such as, a Mind-Mapping tool, were suggested by the experts as good candidates for supporting the discussion/ brainstorming process. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Workshop on Computational Tools Usage (1/2) • C2Learn Summer School 2013 “Creativity and Games in Education” • Held in Crete, Greece, on the4th July 2013 • The Computational Tools Palette was provided to participants. • Five groups of 4-5 persons were asked to perform collectively two distinct tasks, whose solution could be assisted by the usage of the computational tools. • Along with the educators (19 teachers of different specialties and class grades; though mainly of secondary education), three (3) educational content designers and one (1) educational game designer also participated. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Workshop on Computational Tools Usage (2/2) The groups were asked to: • make up a story on an arbitrary initial theme, using results from the Random Word Generator (5 words) and the Image Finder (3 images) services • build a Mind Map with the support of the Information Summarization service (choosing 3 words from the cloud of terms returned). 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning

Random Word Generator The tutor provides an initial seed phrase that describes in broad terms the intended subject of the designed activity. The system responds with a random term (or set of terms) of varying semantic distance from the initial phrase. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Search Engine Wrapper The Search Engine Wrapper is used to obtain online information related to a subject defined by the tutor. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Image Finder It uses the initial seed to retrieve web images and present them to the user, who is then left to consider the implications and associations with the problem at hand. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Resource Discovery Engine It returns information of different modality and relevance to the users, who are expected to adapt the provided information in the context of the particular problem that they are facing. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Information Summarisation It provides a tag-cloud consisting of the dominant words found in web pages related to a specific subject. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
Summary Clustering It discovers the main subjects of online activity/ discussion related to a subject, without explicitly defining them. 8th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
