Rococo Art Movement – 1715-1780s • Emerged as a new movement following the death of Louis XIV in 1715 (72 year reign!!) • Regent, Philippe d'Orléans, who governed France for Louis XV (until 1723) was interested in amusement and pleasure • Government moved from Versailles to Paris – French nobility move back to Paris and beyond – reassert themselves • Reject heavy ornate Baroque style associated with Louis XIV and Versailles
Characteristics of Rococo • Lighter, more delicate • Lovely textures, opulence; expense • Feathery foliage; fantasy landscapes • Thoughtful; poetic dimension • Associated mostly with decorative arts: pastel colors; irregular, curvilinear shapes (based on plant forms); delicate lines, soft textures. • Love of sensuous colors, fluid forms, lively movement • Everything treated with a lighter touch; light-hearted; light-headed. ;) • PLEASURE-LOVING ARISTOCRACY • Artists: Watteau; Fragonard
