What is Pantomime?. A form of theatre traditionally performed at Christmas. It is outrageous and over- the–top family entertainment . Where does this art form come from ?. It was a popular form of entertainment in ancient Greece and Rome , involving songs and music.

  1. Whatis Pantomime? A form of theatretraditionallyperformedat Christmas. It isoutrageous and over-the–topfamilyentertainment.

  3. It was a popularform of entertainment in ancientGreeceand Rome, involvingsongs and music.

  4. In the Middle Ages, the Mummers Play hadelements of pantomime, with stage fights, coarse humour and fantasticcreatures.

  5. It isoftenperformedaround the Midwinter festival (winter solstice) or Twelfth Night – the 6th January These festivals reflectpre-christianbeliefs. Traditionally the naturalorder of thingsisreversed.

  6. It wasalsoinfluenced by the Commedia Dell’Arte

  7. The travelling theatre troupe beganwiththe Renaissance and wasaimedatentertaining the people. There were stock characterssuch as Harlequin, Pantaloon and Pulchinello (Pierrot) Theyusedmasks and highlyvisualcomedy Music and songwere an important feature

  8. In the late 17th century a pantomime wasconsidered a lowform of opera, withitscomicsongs. In the 18th Century ‘Harlequinades’ wereintroducedat the end of the pantomimes. Theyincludedslapstickcomedy. The Harlequinadesgraduallybecame part of the pantomime and itbecame a show itself.
