1- Have you ever been to a journey with your parents? Where was it? How far was it from Cairo? I travelled to Alexandria in summer. It took us 250 km ( kilometers) from Cairo. • So you understand from this example that the word journey means trip.
Remember 1-Characters : People or animals acting in the story. 2- Setting: The place where the story takes place.
Look at the picture in LBp 42 then read the yellow box and answer the following questions: 1- Who are the characters in the story? They are Naledi, Tiro, granny and baby sister. 2- What’s the setting? Jo’burg ( Johannesburg) 3- Who did the children live with? They lived with their granny. 4- How far is the journey to Jo’burg? It is 300 kilometers far.
5-Where did Naledi and Tiro’s mother work? She worked in Johannesburg. 6- Why did the children decide to go to their mother in Johannesburg? They decided to go there to get money for their baby sister who was very sick. 7- How are they going to go to their mother? They are going to walk to Johannesburg to find their mother.
Vocabulary • Track = road ( big street) 2. Dusty road = not clean ( comes from the word dust) 3. Grass land = road that has grass on both sides
4. Tar road = smooth road # scratchy(sharp) 5. Glint (ed) = shines/ reflects light 6. Tyre= thick round piece of rubber around the wheel path
7. Roar (ed) = loud sound of cars or lions 8. Skimmed = move quickly 9. Still = not to move
10. Skidded = sound of the car when it stops suddenly 11. Set off = start 12. Afford = give money or food 13. Stabs of hunger = when your stomach hurts because of not eating
14. Tune = sound of music ( song) 15. Mutter (ed) = to speak softly in a low voice 16. Steadily = to move straight forward without changing your direction • Sigh (ed) = to breathe out slowly and noisily because of being tired, sad or happy
18. flopped down= to throw yourself on a sofa to have rest # pull yourself up 19. wedge against = try to squeeze yourself in a crowded place
20- Rra = Sir in South Africa 21. Alongside = beside 22. Break the silence = to sing so as not to get bored or to interupt 23. Confident = sure 24. Gazed = to look with your eyes opened 25.Sacks = large strong bags
Listen to unit 5 in LB P:42-43 then answer the following questions: • Where did the children want to go? • Could the children buy train tickets? Why? • Was it hot? How do you know? • What did the children do while they were walking? • How was Tiro feeling ? • What did they have to eat and drink? • Where was the lorry going to ?
8. Why could not the lorry driver take them back home? 9. Have you ever faced such an experience? What was it? ( opinion question) 10. What would you do if you were in their place? ( opinion question)
Model answers for the previous questions • The children wanted to go to Johannesburg. • No, they could not because they had no money. • Yes, because the tar road burnt their feet. • While the children were walking they sang to break the silence. • Tiro was hungry. • They had to eat sweet potatoes and drink water.

Exercise 2 • The children sang as they walked along to break the silence. • The grass was dry and scratchy because it was too hot. • I think the lorry driver kind, thoughtful and helpful.
