Surface Water. Kaitlin Barton. Water Cycle. Definition: the movement of water ,on, above, and below earth’s surface. Example: water from the ocean evaporates, rises, condenses, and then rains back down on earth to replenish the water supply for animals and plants.

  3. Runoff • Definition: water that runs off the earth Example: rain running off lawns and streets during a heavy rainfall to end up in the drains at the end of the street

  4. Water infiltration • When water on the surface enters the soil Example: rain being absorbed by the soil

  5. Stream system

  6. Watersheds and Divides • Watershed- land area whose water drains into a stream system

  7. Pennsylvania drainage basins

  8. Stream load • Solid matter carried by a stream Ex: A twig floating down a stream

  9. Suspension Lighter particles are held up by the stream’s moving water. Example: Small particles of dirt flowing near the top of a stream.

  10. Bed Load • Sand, pebbles, and cobbles that the stream rolls or pushes along the bed of a stream Ex: potholes being drilled by pebbles swirling on the bed

  11. Stream carrying capacity • Ability of a stream to transport material

  12. Floodplain • Broad, flat area that extends out from a stream’s bank and is covered by excess water during times of flooding An area off the side of a stream floods as a downpour lasts for days…a flat area is left behind as sediment is eroded and dropped on the floodplain.

  13. Flood • When water spills over the sides of a stream’s bank. A huge downpour lasting for two days, causing the streams in the area to swell, spill over, and run through the city.

  14. Meander • A bend or curve in a stream channel caused by moving water.

  15. Point bar • Crescent shaped deposition point , located on the inside of a stream’s bend
