  1. Confirmation # 71. What is the one true Church established by Jesus Christ?

  2. The one true Church established by Jesus Christ is the Roman Catholic Church.

  3. It is the Church which Our Lord started when He picked the twelve Apostles and made St. Peter their head [Matt. 16].

  4. 2. How do we know that the Roman Catholic Church is the one true Church established by Christ?

  5. Because only the Roman Catholic Church has the Four (4) Marks of the true Church of Christ.

  6. 3. What are the Four Marks of the Church? The Four Marks of the Church are:One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.

  7. One: it has One Sacrifice, One Catechism, One leader on earth (the Pope) and One Faith (Creed).

  8. Holy: the Means are Holy (the sacraments) and the End sought is Holy: the holiness of its members and Heaven.

  9. Catholic: the Church is Universal: meant for persons of every time and place, every race and ethnicity, etc.

  10. Apostolic: there is an unbroken line of succession from St. Peter the apostle to the current pope, Benedict XVI.

  11. 4. What is the “Communion of Saints”? The union of the faithful on earth (the church militant) with the souls in purgatory (the church suffering) and with the blessed souls in heaven (the church triumphant).

  12. Everything we do affects every other soul in the Church (!) All connected. For better or for worse…

  13. 5. God gave the Church the power to forgive sins. This power is exercised in the sacrament of Confession.

  14. 6. As Catholics, we believe that at the end of the world we will all be re-united with our bodies.

  15. This is what is meant in the Creed by “the resurrection of the body”. Before the General Judgment, we get our bodies back.

  16. 7. We believe also that there exist three distinct places a soul may go after death [the separation of the soul from the body].

  17. The three places are: Heaven (for the saved souls free of all sin) Hell (for the damned souls) Purgatory (for saved souls not free of all sin or punishment due to sin).

  18. After the General Judgment, Purgatory will cease to exist and there will exist only Heaven and Hell.

  19. These represent the “life everlasting” in the Creed.

  20. Every soul lives forever and every soul will spend eternity in one of these two places, either Heaven or Hell. [AMEN]
