The Second Commandment You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God God’s name is every word or title that he has made known about himself. He makes his name known to us in the Bible. Romans 10:13 “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” God has made his name known to us so that we will be saved.

Using God’s name uselessly or carelessly This is called using God’s name in vain God expects us to have reverence for his name. James 3:10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Cursing = mocking God or wishing evil from God on someone
Swearing = calling on God to witness the truth and punish the lie. Matthew 26:63-64 Matthew 26:69-74 Swearing that is permitted – required by proper authority Swearing that is forbidden – perjury, unnecessary, thoughtless
Practicing superstition = trusting in something besides God’s Word I Samuel 28:4-13 Examples: fortune telling, palm reading, astrology, Ouija boards
Lying by God’s name = teaching false doctrine and saying it’s God’s Word Matthew 7:15 Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. Acts 5:1-11 Matthew 15:7-8 Deceiving by God’s name = pretending to be a Christian (hypocrisy)
The Third Commandment: Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy. Exodus 20:8-11 Old Testament believers were required to worship on the 7th day (Saturday). Sabbath is a Hebrew word which means rest Old Testament believers were to rest on the Sabbath as God rested after he created the world.
Colossians 2:16-17 The Old Testament Sabbath was a shadow of things to come Matthew 11:28-29 It pointed to Jesus who is the giver of rest
Matthew 9:2 No longer do we need the Sabbath as a reminder of the rest to come; with Jesus we have rest, have the reality Jesus gives rest by forgiving us our sins

Matthew 18:20 Whenever we gather together in Jesus’ name, Jesus is with us.
