Aim, Purpose, and Audience in Writing • If you don’t know what you’re aiming for, how can you hit the target? • Before you start writing, know your aim by keeping 2 things in mind: • PURPOSE or your reason for writing • AUDIENCE or who your readers are
PURPOSE for Writing • Know your purpose, or reason, for writing • Here are the main purposes for writing • to inform (pass on new information) • to explain (tell how to do something) • to entertain (tell a story, a poem, or a play) • to persuade (influence readers to do something or think in a certain way)
AUDIENCE for Writing • Know who your readers are and always keep your audience in mind • This determines if your writing should be relaxed, formal, or somewhere in between • Your audience determines the words you choose, what information they might already know, and what they need to know
