SWS SSP Technology Initiative 2011Holroyd SchoolMary Brooksbank SchoolChalmers Road School Morning Circle Template Activities: Smart Notebook Users Guide The following document is a guide designed to assist teachers in implementing the Morning Circle Template in a way that is specific to their students and their needs. The document provides step by step instructions for how to alter specific details of the template, for each slide in the template. In most cases a very simple knowledge of Smart Notebook software is required to make any of the changes. The document is also designed so that teachers may delete aspects of the template that they feel are not appropriate to their student group. It was also designed so that teachers could change or insert additional or more suitable content, learning activities, songs or videos once they become more familiar with using the technology.
Template Activities: Notebook Opening page: From Morning Circle Template 2011 3. To commence an activity touch the PCS to link to the relevant page. 2. Drag student photos to the various morning circle activities . Ensure you draw students' attention to their activity. 1. Replace these with your own students photographs. These should be cloned if students are require to complete more than one activity • 4. Use the ‘now’ and ‘finished’ symbol s to indicate the start and finish of activities.

Add alternative songs to suit class. 3. T.V. screens link to videos associated with greetings. Add alternative video to suit your students. 4. Finished symbol takes you to the opening page.

Touch PCS to be taken to ‘How many people at school’ activity. Here students categorise boys and girls and explore concepts associated with counting and addition. 1. Replace photos with own students. 5. Finished symbol takes you to the opening page.

Students drag their photo to the appropriate category i.e. boy or girl. • 4. Select student to drag the appropriate number to represent the amount of boys and girls.. Student then proceeds to add boys and girls together. • 1. Replace photos with own students. Reduce or increase students as appropriate 5. Finished symbol takes you to the opening page.

(Note: To replace a name unlock name box and ungroup box. Double –click on text to edit. When finished regroup and set box to “Allow Move”. 3. Encourage students to select letters in the correct order. • Note: Reduce or increase the amount of letters (distractors) to suit the learning needs of your students. 3. When finished regroup and set box to “Lock in place”. • 4. Student writes name. (Note: to change letter-boxes unlock and ungroup. Copy or delete boxes as needed.) • Note: As performance improves reduce the outline text (model). For example the sentence may be “My name is”.

Talk about yesterday’s routine as a prompt to assist students with selecting the day for yesterday. Select student to drag the correct day to complete the sentence ‘Yesterday was :’. The process is continued for today and tomorrow. 1. Touch PCS to initiate songs related to days of the week. Add alternative songs to suit class. T.V. screens link to videos associated with days of the week. • 3. Finished symbol takes you to the opening page.
Template Activities: Notebook What month is it page: From Morning Circle Template 2011 3. Use the ‘now’ symbol to emphasis ‘Last month’, ‘This month’ or ‘Next month’. • 2. Following song/video discuss months of the year with class . Select student to drag the correct months to indicate last month, this month and next month. 1. Touch PCS to initiate songs related to months of the year. T.V. screens link to videos associated with months of year. Add alternative songs/videos to suit class.. 3. Calendar PCS is linked to ‘Months of the Year’ page. From here you can generate a calendar for the current month.

PCS’s for yesterday, today and tomorrow can be used by students to highlight the dates for each appropriate symbol. 2. Finished symbol is cloned. Select student to drag symbol to highlight days that have already ‘finished’. 1. Insert your students photos who have a birthday in the current month. 4. Touch PCS to be taken to ‘Today’s date is’ page. From here students can write/trace today’s date using the correct format.

Double –click on each piece of text to edit. When finished regroup and set box to “Lock in place”. 3. Student with stylus pen traces/write today’s date. • 3. Template Activities: Notebook The weather main page: From Morning Circle Template 2011 • 1. TV links to video which introduces the concept of the weather. 2. Studentselects appropriate PCS for the day’s weather. Links to a page with video selections. • 3. Student selects and drags the appropriate PCS and word for the day’s weather. 4. This PCS is linked to a page about temperature. This page can be removed based on the content you want to cover. • 5. This PCS is linked to the ‘We are wearing’ page. • 6. Finished symbol takes you to the opening page.
Template Activities: Notebook Temperature page: From Morning Circle Template 2011 • 1. This will take you to ‘The Weather Channel’ webpage . It is automatically set to display the current day’s forecast for the Sydney area. Discuss with class the temperature it is expected to reach. 3. Studentdrags the word and PCS which indicates today’s temperature to complete the sentence ‘Today the temperature is’. • 5. This PCS is linked to the ‘We are wearing’ page. 2. Student drags the arrow on the thermometer to indicate the temperature it will reach today. Discuss with class if the temperature for today is ‘very hot’, ‘hot’, etc. 4. Student with stylus pen traces sentence.

There are pages for boys and girls. From here they will be taken to the dressing page. • 2. Finished symbol takes you to the opening page.

Student uses the arrow to update their feelings chart to show how they are currently feeling. • 6. Finished symbol takes you to the activity main page.
