Citizen • A person with certain rights and duties under a government
Who Is a Citizen? Constitution says: Birth or by choice; owe allegiance to this nation
Citizen: Legal Definition If any of the following are true: 1. Born in U.S or its territories 2. At least one of your parents was a citizen when you were born 3. Naturalized 4. Parents were naturalized before you were age 18
Alien • Acitizen of one country who lives in another country • Have same rights as a citizen except can’t vote or hold govt. office
Naturalization • Process of becoming a citizen
Naturalization Process • Step 1 : Application • Step 2: Examination • Step 3: Final Hearing
Step 1: Application • Submit to INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service)
Step 2: Examination • Be age 18 or older • Legal resident in country for at least 5 yrs and of state for at least 3 months • Good Moral Character • Loyal to principles of U.S. Constitution • Knowledge of U.S history and government
Step 3: Final Hearing • Applicant appears before a court • INS responds to application • Judge asks applicant to take an oath of loyalty to the U.S • Applicant receives certificate of citizenship
Naturalized Citizens’ Rights • All Duties and rights except can’t be President or VP • Once a citizen, always a citizen except, if trying to overthrow the U.S. government by force
Office of Citizen • Citizens elect representatives- people who speak and act for citizens in a government • We lend our power to them; can give and take away
