What is included in a paragraph? A paragraph consists of several sentences that are grouped together. This group of sentences together discuss one main subject. Paragraphs have three principal parts. These three parts are the topic sentence, body sentences, and the concluding sentence.
The Topic Sentence A topic sentence usually comes at the beginning of a paragraph Not only is a topic sentence the first sentence of a paragraph, but, more importantly, it is the most general sentence in a paragraph What does "most general" mean? It means that there are not many details in the sentence, but that the sentence introduces an overall idea that you want to discuss later in the paragraph
Example of Topic Sentence • If you want to write a paragraph about your hometown you may begin the paragraph with: “My hometown is known for several amazing features.” • What questions come to mind when you read this sentence?
Supporting Sentences • The first question that should come to mind when reading that sentence is: What amazing features are we talking about? • What would be a good supporting sentence to go with this topic sentence? • What is a supporting sentence?
What is a Supporting Sentence? A supporting sentence is called this because it supports or explains the idea expressed in the topic sentence Your paragraph should have around three supporting sentences with details
Supporting Sentences My hometown is known for several amazing features. One great feature would be the CN Tower which can be spotted from several different places throughout the city. There is also Lake Ontario which is great for nice walks along the water or sports like beach volleyball. Not to mention all the wonderful restaurants around the city where you can try any number of cultures or types of food.
Closing Sentence In formal paragraphs you will see a sentence at the end of the paragraph which summarizes the information that has been presented. This is the concluding sentence A good closing sentence for this paragraph may be: “These features make my hometown a wonderful place to live or visit any time of year”
Something to Remember… Always think of your paragraph like a hamburger: top bun, middle section (the burger and 2 toppings) and the bottom bun.

These features make my hometown a wonderful place to live or visit any time of year.
