SIGNPOSTS OF DEMOCRACY How do we know which nations are democratic and which are not?
LESSON OBJECTIVES • Identify & describe key signposts of democracy • Evaluate the principles of democracy at work in the U.S.A. • Use primary source documents and written word to support your rating of the U.S. democratic system
ESSENTIAL QUESTION • How does our U.S. perspective on “what is a democracy” differ from those of other nations and cultures? Or… does it differ at all?
Step 1: Brainstorming -Brainstorm characteristics of a democracy. ( We did a similar activity earlier this year, so dig up those old memories!!) -Write your list of terms, drawings, etc. down on one side of the poster paper. Be ready to share with the class! -Hint: There are EIGHT “signposts” or characteristics…. Who can guess them all?
GROUPS Savanah, Haley, David Carme, Breanna, Alejandra, Jared Pahana, Anthony, Lily Jack, Farhiya, Jack, Luis Safari, Taylor, Carlos, Maria, Josh Dominic, Darrell, Brendan, Lynette Santiago, Quinn, Sam, Thalia Olivia, Piper, Augustin
STEP 2- Put it in your OWN words -Each group will get ONE of the 8 signposts of democracy -Explain what YOU think this signpost is… have Ms. S check off on your explanation -After Ms. S approves, create a banner for your signpost. Include: -Name of signpost -Definition (in student-friendly terms) -TWO examples of how you “see” this in daily life -One drawing/picture related to your signpost
STEP 3- Rank the U.S. -How does our country measure up against your signpost? -Give the U.S. one of the following ratings 1) Excellent 2) Acceptable 3) Needs improvement 4) Unacceptable -Justify your position with specific examples. WHY did you rank the U.S. the way you did?
STEP 4- Share your signpost & your ranking + Gallery Walk -Prepare a 3 minute presentation on your signpost and present to the class. 1-What is your signpost? 2-What does it mean? 3-How do you see this signpost “in action”? 4- How does the drawing relate to the signpost? 5-How did you rank the U.S.? 6-What’s the support/evidence for this ranking? -As you listen to other groups present, take notes on the Signposts graphic organizer.
HOMEWORK • Do an in-depth evaluation of the U.S. against a democratic signpost of your choosing • DUE ON MONDAY!!! • This HW requires access to a computer, newspaper or magazine source. Plan ahead if you need to use school resources to complete the assignment.
