About The Campus School… • Mission Statement: Boston College Campus School is committed to providing quality education to children with multiple challenges including complex health care needs • On campus in Campion Hall • Majority of students are non-verbal and are in wheelchairs
Goals for Project • Allows medical team to get to know the child • Facilitates hospitalization process for the non-verbal patient without a parent present • Helps nurses learn how to interact with patient and how to provide minimal discomfort for the child
My Project • Pt Advocacy- Developing a template and/or booklet for the non-verbal child in the hospital setting, particularly geared to those without a parental figure present during the hospitalizationallows the healthcare provider to better understand the patient and his/her needs.
About the Book • On each page there is helpful information about the child, along with pictures showing the student doing their favorite activities with family or friends • About Me Page- likes and dislikes, what makes me happy or sad, family & friends, how you can tell I’m in pain/discomfort, I use special signs to say…
Sample • My name is • I will be spending some time at _____ hospital • My mom and dad will not be with me • These are my friends at school (picture) • This is my family (picture) • I use special signs to say…. • When I get upset, I usually… • ________ makes me happy • If I appear to be lethargic or irritable… • I have a special page about communicating my pain, which I made with my communication teacher • Thank you for taking care of me!
Ben’s Story • Bedside and medical book, “Cheat Sheet”- put pictures of when Ben was happy and healthy • Nutrition reports, medical history, neuro reports, previous hospitalizations • Classical music = safe time • Example: If Ben appears lethargic, check his O2, check lighting, etc • If upset, comforted by being held • When coughing, let him cough it out a little bit before resorting to suctioning
