A note about language in Douglass’ autobiography Douglass sometimes includes words we consider offensive. Derogatory words were part of the experience slaves endured, and Douglass’ wanted his readers to understand, as much as possible, how one group of people mistreated another. He wanted to expose readers to the reality of his experience.
