Detector Control System at the GIF++ A. Polini (INFN Bologna) on behalf of WP 8.5.3 group 29/06/2012 Outline • What needs to be provided • Manpower • First Design Consideration • Hardware + Software Options • Cost Estimate • Plans A. Polini
Manpower Groups: • INFN Bologna • A. Polini et al. • NTUA group • E.N.Gazis, T. Alexopoulos, G.Tsipolitis, + 5 students (NTUA group) • Techion Univ. • S. Tarem et. Al. Groups with good experience in DCS A. Polini
Present Baseline Use PVSS (as in LHC experiments) Many components, devices, HW and SW already available (CAEN System, CAN PSU, ELMB, ENV Sensors, VME crates etc.) A baseline system could be: Power System CAEN Easy: • 1 mainframe, 1 Power Generator, 1-2 crates + with HV and LV boards(*) and 1ADC A-3801 board for monitoring (128 channels) (*) Some Low Voltage possibly external (non CAEN) with remote control via PVSS. A. Polini
About the CAEN System Pros: Well established, very flexible, and reliable architecture Lots of software can be taken from ATLAS/RD-51 No other option usable given the system and manpower constraints Contra: Main one: cost !!! Baseline costs high(*). Options of resource sharing Buy only part of the equipment Rent from CERN pool or other group the remaining part (*) Note: The costs do not scale linearly… a larger system (including larger number of subsystems and/or power and monitoring channels) is in proportion more affordable. A. Polini
Cost Estimate (i) DCS Caen Equipment ~ 15k€ (a bit less w/o EASY) RPC HV (12 KV min 6 ch): 5k€ - 8k€ TGCs: (3 KV, min 8 channels) 3.2k€ - 7.4k€ Extended Monitoring (ADC) and DAC (only w/ EASY) A. Polini
Cost Estimate (ii) Low Voltage: RPC: (~45 W) TGC: LV requirements for TGC not yet available (as being heavily dependent on Front End electronics and detector design Option of using external (remotely controlled) Low Voltage systems possibly connected to DCS (CAN etc.) Cheaper Still controllable within DCS system PC and infrastructure: 2500 CHF A. Polini
Conclusions DCS Baseline design available Resources in terms of manpower and experience not problematic Some (not small) adjustments still needed Main issue is the Cost • A complete solution not below 30 k€ Some options for reducing the cost available though Going for a fully non CAEN solution much more demanding in terms of manpower and development A.
