President Lincoln • Abraham Lincoln defeated three other candidates in 1860, to become the 16th President of the United States of America
War! • The Civil War began when the Confederate Army attacked Fort Sumter on April 12-14, 1861
Bull Run • Confederate forces defeated the Union Army at the first battle of Bull Run, on July 21, 1861
Free at Last! • Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, which freed the slaves
Gettysburg Address • Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863
Union Victories • General Sherman captured Atlanta, GA on September 2, 1864 • On November 8, Lincoln was elected to his second term as President
Confederates Surrender! • On April 8, 1965, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, VA, ending the Civil War
The President has been Shot! • As President and Mrs. Lincoln were enjoying an evening of comedy at Fords Theater on April 14, 1865, actor John Wilkes Booth snuck into their balcony and shot the President
Death of a President • The President never regained consciousness, and died early in the morning on April 15, 1865 • His funeral procession began in Washington, D.C. and carried his body 1700 miles before arriving in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL, where he was finally laid to rest on May 4, 1865
