  4. TITLE OR THEME OF THE GOSPEL (Mark 1:1)pg 1402 Beginning of the gospel What is the meaning of the word gospel? ( the good news) Mark introduces Jesus as Jesus Christ the Son of God What is the significance of Jesus as the Christ? CCC422 'But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.' This is 'the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God': God has visited his people. He has fulfilled the promise he made to Abraham and his descendants. He acted far beyond all expectation - he has sent his own 'beloved Son'. Jesus is called the “Christ”. What is the meaning of “Christ”? Jesus is the “anointed one” – The “Christ” blessed and anointed by God the Father when he sent the Holy Spirit upon him

  5. TITLE OR THEME OF THE GOSPEL Read Mark 1:1 Pg 1402, Mark 15:39 pg 1431 • Mark 15:39 The Centurion witnesses “Truly this man was the Son of God” • Why was the title “Son of God” used at least 7 times in Mark.i.e. Mark 1:1, 15:39 • Thoughts: • Audience was Christians living in Rome - • Romans had multiple Gods – children of these gods were also gods • Realization that Jesus was the Christ and His Kingdom was to be a spiritual kingdom – therefore he had to be God. • We will see this title confirmed by God himself twice in Mark’.

  6. Exodus 23:20 See I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Isaiah 40:3 A voice proclaims; In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Mark 1:2-4 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold I am sending my messenger ahead of you; A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. PREACHING AND MINISTRY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Read Exodus 23:20 pg 112, Isaiah 40:3 pg 1038, Mark 1:2-4 pg 1402 How do these passages relate to the ministry of John ? Exodus recalls the deliverance of Israel from captivity in Egypt and an angel messenger Isaiah foretells of a messenger preparing the way for another deliverance Prophesy fulfilled in the person of John the Baptist

  7. Zechariah 13:4 On that day all the prophets will be ashamed of the visions they prophesy; and they will not put on the hairy mantle to mislead… Leviticus 11:22 …you may eat of the following; various kinds of locusts… Mark 1:6 John was clothed in camels hair with a leather belt about his waist, He fed on locusts and wild honey. Mark 1:7 I am not worthy to unloose his sandals. PREACHING AND MINISTRY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Read Zechariah 13:4 pg 1304, Leviticus 11:22 pg 146, Mark 1:6-7 pg 1402 How do these passages relate to the ministry of John ? Showed John’s humility Removing sandals was a menial task reserved for slaves • Marked John as a faithful Israelite who kept the O.T. laws and as a prophet • Kosher foods that they were allowed to eat. Marked John as a faithful Israelite who kept the O.T. laws Garment/Mantel of Camel’s hair and leather belt – traditional garb of the O.T. prophets

  8. BAPTISM OF JESUS Read Mark 1: 5-11 pg 1404 River Jordan: Main river in Palestine so it was suitable for baptizing large numbers of people. Jordan is linked to stories of deliverance in the O.T. Preparation for the salvation of Israel and the Gentiles Joshua 3:14-17 pg 271 Deliverance of Israel to the promised land Ark of the Covenant – images for us in our baptism Priest administers the baptism Jesus is present and separates us from sin – the Ark of the Covenant is the dwelling place of God – in baptism we become the temple of the Lord (the new Ark) – 1 Cor 3:16 pg 1605, Eph 2:21 pg 1657 2 Kings 5:14 pg 447 Naaman the Syrian is healed of leprosy Naaman is a Gentile

  9. Jesus comes to be baptized Jesus was sinless – see Hebrews 4:15 pg1706 , 1 Peter 2:22 pg 1732 Why was Jesus baptized? Receives the baptism to identify with sinners: CCC536: The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God's suffering Servant. He allows himself to be numbered among sinners; he is already "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". Already he is anticipating the "baptism" of his bloody death. Already he is coming to "fulfill all righteousness", that is, he is submitting himself entirely to his Father's will: out of love he consents to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. The Father's voice responds to the Son's acceptance, proclaiming his entire delight in his Son. The Spirit whom Jesus possessed in fullness from his conception comes to "rest on him". Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all mankind. At his baptism "the heavens were opened" - the heavens that Adam's sin had closed - and the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Spirit, a prelude to the new creation. Read Genesis 1:1 pg 11 and Gen 8:10-12 pg 22 Spirit descended upon Him like a dove. Reflects Gen 1:1 when the “wind”- Spirit of God - hovered over the waters at creation and Gen 8:10-12 when Noah sent out a dove over the flood waters when the earth had been cleansed.

  10. Jesus’ baptism became the process for our Sacrament of Baptism – 1 Peter 3:18-22 pg 1733- in which we are cleansed of our sin. What does the word sacrament mean? Sign of Grace – instituted by Christ – empowered by the Holy Spirit. When do we first receive the Holy Spirit? We receive the Holy Spirit through the anointing of the Chrism oil. The heavens torn open vs. 10 Written in Greek, the verb is Schizo which means to rip or tear apart, so the heavens were torn apart at the sound of God’s voice. We will see this verb again at the tearing of the veil of the temple 15:38 Voice from heaven “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased” vs. 11 God announces to the world that Jesus is indeed his Son. Psalm 2:7 announces David as the anointed son of God. Jesus is the Royal Son of God – anointed by the Holy Spirit

  11. The Trinity is now present together CCC 536 The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God's suffering Servant.
