  2. What is Respect? • Respect is an important way of being kind and good to other people. • Respect is not making fun of others. • Respect is thinking of how somebody else feels. • Respect is treating another person the same way you’d want to be treated yourself!

  3. What is Tolerance? Tolerance is respecting the DIFFERENCES between human beings. Tolerance is to be aware that you aren't the only person in the world. Your actions and words have an affect or impact people around you.

  4. How does this quote support the idea of tolerance? “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

  5. What positive words come to mind, when you think of TOLERANCE? patience, acceptance, respect, equality, differences, peace, Harmony, knowledge, education, culture

  6. Create Circle Map as ClassGive examples of specific groups of people who may have experienced discrimination. These would be examples of intolerance. Old/young Black/white Female/male Discriminated for being different- examples of intolerance In crowd/ out crowd Straight/gay Gang/non gang Legal/undocumented Poor/rich Hispanic/white On probation/ off probation race

  7. How does it feel to be discriminated against or to experience intolerance by others? • Frustrating • Anger • Resentment • Confusing • Shameful • Indifferent • Sad/Upsetting

  8. What negative words come to mind when you think of INTOLERANCE? • Discrimination • Judgment • Hate • Ignorance • Fighting • Anger • Disrespect

  9. Sometimes… Sometimes, people believe that their ideas, their beliefs their customs, their behaviors, their religion, and their education are THE BEST and think that all the other people must believe what they believe. This is NOT tolerance.

  10. My way is the right way… right? Sometimes, we believe that only our way is the right way. We haven't learned yet to respect the differences between the humans. This is NOT tolerance

  11. Tolerance is…. • Acceptance • Respect & • Appreciation for the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and different ways of being human. Tolerance is harmony/peace in difference.

  12. Our World If we want our world to be better, we must be tolerant in our relationships between persons, countries and cultures; we must know our differences and accept them with respect.
