  3. What is Social Bookmarking? Instead of keeping bookmarks all to yourself, you can easily share them with friends, family, and colleagues. • Web 2.0 application • Sharing bookmarks with others • Available from anytime, anywhere • Organize links • Tagging • Web of information

  4. What is Tagging? Tagging uses word association to categorize, organize, and share bookmarks. • Several words to describe or name an article • Descriptive or personal meaning • Simple way to organize information (in theory) Sample tags for the movie "Jurassic Park:" dinosaurs, suspense, t-rex, raptors, Steven Spielberg, Jeff Goldbloom, movies, sci-fi, novels, Michael Crichton, cloning, DNA, genetics, series, triceratops

History of Bookmarking    The Beginning was trial and error.... • 1996: launch of itList--first site to utilize the concept of shared bookmarks • 1996-1999: online bookmarking services such as Backflip, Blink, Clip2, ClickMarks, and HotLinks • 2001: dot com crash, most of the first generation of bookmarking sites had failed

History Continued   Finally, it found it's place... • 2003: Del.icio.us is founded; pioneer tagging and coin term "social bookmarking" • 2004: Furl, Simply, Stumbleupon and other sites entered the market • 2006: Ma.gnolia, Blue Dot (Faves) and Diigo enter the market • 2006: Connectbeam is founded--aimed at bookmarking and tagging for businesses and enterprises

Advantages • allows users to organize and share information quickly and easily • personalized tags • most provide RSS feeds • allow user to rate and comment about bookmarks  • rank resource based on how many times it's been bookmarked by users Disadvantages • lack of vocabulary control • Mis-tagging due to spelling • personalized tags • spammers and abusive marketing
