  1. Nervous System Review Human bio 11

  2. Parts of the Nervous System

  3. 1. Central Nervous System (CNS) • Includes: • Brain • It is the control center • Takes signals from the sense organs • Processes the info • Sends out new signal telling the body what to do. • Spinal cord • A tube of neurons

  4. 2. Peripheral Nervous System • Nerves that extend beyond the brain and spinal cord.

  5. 3. Autonomic Nervous System • Controls the parts of the body that act without thinking, such as: stomach, intestines, glands…

  6. What is a Nerve? • Nerves are the body’s major cables and contain hundreds of neuron fibers. • The fibers run to every nook and cranny of the body.

  7. What is a Neuron? • The nervous system is made up of cells called neurons. • They have spindly fibers that carry electrical signals. • Some neurons (nerve cells) are several feet long!

  8. Reflexes • When you touch something hot or cold your body sends signals to the brain to tell the body how to react. • Process: • Cells in hand detected heat. • Nerves send message to spinal cord. • Spinal cord decides what to do. • Nerves from spinal cord tell the hand what to do. • Message is to let go of the object.

  9. The Brain • Color is pinkish-brown • Size of 2 fists • Wrinkly surface (folds) • Divided into lobes • Two hemisphere with different abilities and charateristics

  10. 1. Medulla • The smallest part of the brain • Thick stalk at the base of the skull • Connects brain to the spinal cord • Controls involuntary movement (Examples??) • Breathing • Digestion • Heartbeat • Sneezing • Blinking

  11. 2. Cerebrum • Largest part of the brain • Surface has many folds to pack in more cells • Cerebrum is divided into lobes.

  12. Lobes of the Brain • A. Frontal lobe • Conscious thought • Planning • Free will • B. Parietal lobe • Movement • Sensation • Orientation

  13. …Lobes of the Brain • C. Occipital Lobe • Main job is to process information that comes from your eyes • D. Temporal Lobe • Speech • Language • Sound

  14. …Lobes of the Brain • E. Cerebellum • Helps coordinate your body’s movement and keeps you balanced. • F. Brain Stem • This is located at the base of the brain • Vital for basic life support systems, like heart beat, breathing. • If your brain stem stops doing its job, you are considered brain dead

  15. QUIZ NEXT CLASS!! • Open book (but please study!!) • Topics include: • Nerves • Neuron (label and define parts) • Brain (lobes: label and define) • Central Nervous System CNS • Peripheral Nervous System PNS • Autonomic nervous system • Types of questions: Fill in the blanks, labelling, multiple choice, matching, short answer.

  16. Complete the Nervous system web search • This is to be handed in before the end of class!!
