  1. Tips for Developing Self -Regulation Skills in Children

  2. Parents can help children develop self-regulation skills by incorporating simple activities into their daily lives. Here are five tips parents can use to develop self-regulations skills:

  3. DEVELOP YOUR CHILD’S SENSORY DIET! With the help of a self-regulation course or occupational therapist, parents can learn how to provide their children with sensory strategies that can be incorporated into daily routines. Much like a nutritional diet, parents can provide a sensory diet so family and school life can be easier for children.

  4. WHEN IN DOUBT DO HEAVY WORK!! That’s right, heavy work! Doing physical activity such as pushing, pulling, tugging, and towing can help your child find the right level of alertness for activities that require focus like homework.

  5. “BLOW IT” TO SUPPORT DEEP BELLY BREATHING! When children (or adults) are in a high state of alertness, they tend to breathe with shorter, more shallow breaths. Help your child to do fun blowing activities that encourage deep belly breathing to support their self-regulation. Try bubbles, whistles, or other blowing activities in the Take Five! Staying Alert at Home and School book (Williams & Shellenberger, 2001).

  6. ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO FIDGET SO THEY CAN BETTER ATTEND AND FOCUS! Provide your child with small manipulative toys like Silly Putty® or a relaxable “squeezie” ball. This type of heavy work in the hands can help children to be alert, attentive, and focused.
