  2. Goal of DfE Auto Refinish Project • to motivate auto refinish shops to adopt best practices and technologies that reduce risk and pollution

  3. Profile of Auto Refinish Industry • 60,000 shops, 150,000 auto refinishers in the U.S. • Shops use & release harmful chemicals (diisocyanates, solvents, paint additives) • Diisocyanates are a leading cause of occupational asthma • Air emissions may pose a risk to nearby residents

  4. Auto Refinish Industry in Philadelphia • 400 shops • Painters do not use adequate personal protective equipment • DfE project complements other pollution prevention & risk reduction activities focused on auto refinish sector

  5. DfE Approach • Identify significant risk & pollution issues • Build active partnerships • Conduct shop visits to identify best practices that reduce risk & pollution • Compare costs, benefits, barriers • Identify factors that motivate change • Measure improvements in shop practices • Develop effective outreach strategy
