Major Global Concerns • The introduction of alien species into a new environment may be potentially threatening to native ecosystems, human health & local economies. • All alien species DO NOT always have a negative impact on their new environs. However, it is important to determine:- * which introductions to prevent * early detection of invasive traits * eradiction methods * control methods JA CHM 2002

  3. Major Global Concerns (cont.) • Data and information, if available, is often scattered, incomplete or in a form not useful to persons who need to identify and manage invasive species. JA CHM 2002

  4. Jamaica Clearing-House Mechanism(JA CHM) • I3N – JA is managed by the JA CHM located at the Natural History Division, Institute of Jamaica • The JA CHM promotes and facilitates: * scientific and technical cooperation * access to and exchange of public information on biodiversity. JA CHM 2002

  5. I3N-JA Advisory Committee The Advisory Committee includesRepresentatives from the Ministries of Land & Environment and of Agriculture, University of the West Indies, National Working Group on Alien Invasive Species, Institute of Jamaica and the IABIN Focal Point. This Committee decided on the scope of the I3N – JA. JA CHM 2002

  6. Scope of I3N – JA • focus only on alien and not native invasive species • emphasize documentation of existing data and information with respect to Jamaican biodiversity and agricultural systems. • human health issues were seen as important, but outside the scope of this project. JA CHM 2002

  7. Outline Of I3N – JA • 1. Collaborative database development process. • 2. Develop four databases namely: i) Invasive species ii) Experts involved in invasive species research and management iii) Invasive species projects iv) Available invasive species datasets. JA CHM 2002

Summary of Questionnaire Results • Of greatest professional concern with regards to alien invasive species was ‘Field Research’ and ‘Protection of marine environments’. • While their was a heavy reliance on meetings & workshops for information, these were seen as insufficient in providing adequate information. • However, the Internet was seen as the most efficient way of accessing information. Summary of Questionnaire Results (Cont.) • High priority was given to the following: • information on species distribution & management strategies • Data sheets on alien invasive species & environments affected by alien invasive species • A few responders said they would be willing to share information JA CHM 2002

INVASIVE SPECIES PROJECTS • The Department of Life Sciences, University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus has a postgraduate student working on the Green Mussel (Perna viridis) along the south coast of Jamaica primarily the Kingston Harbour. • A collaborative project between National Environment & Planning Agency staff, UWI staff and also from the international institutions such as Fort Worth Zoo in the USA has control of the Indian Mongoose as a secondary objective. The goal of the project is the conservation of the Jamaican Iguana and its habitat, the Hellshire Hills Dry forest.  JA CHM 2002

  18. Data & Information Access The project’s progress & technical reports, species lists and bibliography are available at IABIN’s I3N website (www.iabin-us.org/projects/i3n_project.html).
