Switzerland is definitely not lacking in excursion destinations. Thanks to the good transport connections, you can quickly get to enchanting places that are always worth a trip. Whether it's a city trip or a ride to lakes, mountain landscapes, or cozy villages, there is certainly something for everyone.
For a great road trip, we recommend the Grand Tour of Switzerland. Here you will be guided through breathtaking glacier landscapes, discover palm-fringed lakes and stroll through medieval villages. The variety of sights is brilliant and provides endless highlights on your trip. Of course, you can also simply choose sections of the tour and experience the beauty of Switzerland during a day trip.
ROUTE FROM ZURICH TO ST. GALLEN (APPROX. 155KM) The trip starts in Zurich and leads to St. Gallen. The first stop is at the Rheinfall, the largest waterfall in Europe. St. Gallen itself invites you to linger in its car-free old town and, with its colorful architecture, is one of the top attractions on the Grand Tour of Switzerland.
On the way, you will pass through a unique hilly landscape in which the village of Appenzell is nestled. If you are in the mood for nature and hiking, then the Alpstein area is just right for you.
On your way to the south of Switzerland, you will pass Muottas Muragl near Pontresina. A hike is worthwhile because on the summit you have the whole Upper Engadin at your feet. From here you have a breathtaking view of beautiful lakes and the famous resort of St. Moritz.
A visit to Monte Brè above Lake Lugano when leaving Lugano will give you a great view. Along the way to Zermatt lies Ascona with its pretty old town. On the rest of the way, you will take the famous passes St. Gotthard and Furka and pass the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps.
In Zermatt, a ride on the Gornergrat Bahn is a must. From here you will travel into the French-speaking Switzerland, where you will be accompanied by rivers and forests on your journey. The last stage takes you along the shores of Lake Geneva to Montreux with its famous Chillon Castle.
Your ride will take you past the orchards and vineyards of Lavaux to Lausanne. Later on, your route you will cross the Gruyère region, with green hills and the peaks of the Fribourg Pre-Alps.
In Interlaken, a boat trip on the turquoise-blue Lake of Brienz or the neighboring Lake of Thun is worthwhile. From here you can marvel at the sublime peaks of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. On the further way to Lucerne, Bern invites you to go shopping.
