Maintaining Your Phono Cartridge

A phono cartridge is a small device that turns the vibrations from a record's grooves into an electrical signal. It is a key part of a turntable and greatly affects sound quality. Inside the cartridge is a stylus that follows the grooves of the record and a group of coils that create the electrical signal.

Turntables use different types of cartridges, mainly moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC). Moving magnet cartridges are more widely used and generally produce a higher output voltage, making them suitable for many phono inputs.
