  1. Formatting PPA for Debate M. Molloy

  2. The adapted philosophy • The students were asked to debate current policies by examining and researching problems that they identify.

  3. Goals • To give the students a problem based model in debate that would be a closer process to what they would use in the ‘real world.’ • To give the students a forum to critically examine public policies.

  4. Where we started: • We needed to gain an understanding of problems and policies as outlined by the tips program.

  5. An Umbrella Topic Due to the great focus on police community relations the students chose to deal with the problems and polices concerning policing bodies in society.

  6. Policing Bodies • NYS Regents • NYPD • Law makers and abortion • School Safety

  7. Instruction • Lessons that I developed on policing bodies. • Ten minute min-lessons to prepare them for the computer lab. • Policy and problem exercises

  8. Developmental Lessons • I developed lessons on policing bodies that included information about: - Police psychology - Sociological discussions of policing - The function of policing Bodies in different societies

  9. The Internet effective research compiling internet information importing graphics and charts citing internet information Power Point general use using clip art and imported graphics using the LCD projector animation Mini-lessons on computers

  10. Mock Debates • Used to sharpen critical thinking. • Used to practice the application of PPA. • Used to sharpen dull areas of presentations and debates

  11. Computer Applications • Web research • Student power point presentations • Word processing • Surveying • Graph making

  12. The Computer Lab • A place to do research • A place to learn PowerPoint • Almost entirely a student centered environment

  13. Assessment • Students had to present their report using Power Point. • One written research paper.

  14. Sample Student Work Parking Laws

  15. Car Owners Surveyed on W232nd Street

  16. “The problem being addressed with the strict parking laws is the need for money to cover law suits brought against the city.”

  17. The Regents Exam What Problem Does it Solve?

  18. Problem: • The standard that student work reaches in the public school system is low and therefore high school education is devalued. Policy: • Require students to pass regents exams that measure necessary skills before they are granted a High School diploma.

  19. Ilian Gonelez • “What is the body that decides weather or not Llian can stay here? What problems does this body base its policies on?”

  20. Problem: The lack of value placed on marriage

  21. Summary • A good method to teach students in a student centered and ‘real world’ environment. • A system that lends itself really well to using technology in the classroom
