Recent Improvements in HotSpot for the DOE Safety Software Toolbox May 6, 2009 Steven Homann and Fernando Aluzzi NARAC-IMAAC Program Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, P. O. Box 808, Livermore, CA 94551 This work performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract DE-AC52-07NA27344 UCRL-XXXX-12345
HotSpot Provides Quick Dose Estimates for Radiological Releases and Nuclear Explosions • Multiple release scenarios (explosive, fire, resuspension, general plume) • Fully-integrated FGR11 (ICRP26, 30), and FGR 13 (ICRP 60+) internal and FGR 12 external dose factors • Straight-line hybrid Gaussian plume model • Standalone version available via Web download: http://www-gs.llnl.gov/hotspot • Can run in NARAC Web and iClient user interface and maps • Plume passage dose (Submersion, Inhalation) • Ground shine + weathering • Resuspension + weathering • Avoidable Dose (resuspension and/or ground shine)
Current HotSpot 2.07 Windows 95/98/2000/NT/XP/ Vista Apple Computer + Windows Emulator
HotSpot Dose Conversion Factors Updated with DCFPAK 1.8 Values (ICRP 60+) Using new ORNL dose conversion factor data base: DCFPAK 1.8: Particle size options: 1 micron AMAD : atmospheric release 5 micron AMAD : Radionuclides in the workplace FGR11 / ICRP30 or FGR13 / ICRP60+ 50-year Committed Effective Dose (plume passage / resuspension)Equivalent Individual tissue/organ Committed Equivalent Dose Equivalent 30-day acute RBE-weighted organ dose Lung Red Bone Marrow Thyroid Small Intestine Wall External air submersion and ground shine
HotSpot 2.07 Uses Optional ICRP 60 Dose Terminology Total Effective Dose (TED) = sum of the external component of the Effective Dose (EExternal) and the Committed Effective Dose (E50 ), HotSpotTED output includes Plume Passage Inhalation Committed Effective Dose (E50) Submersion Effective Dose (EExternal) Post Plume Passage (Integral from time1 to time2) Resuspension(Inhalation) Committed Effective Dose(E50) Ground Shine (Integral from time1 to time2) Effective Dose (EExternal)
HotSpot Dose Projections Include Resuspension and Ground Shine with Weathering Correction Weathering correction factors for nuclear fallout and deposition of radionuclides. Two options: WASH 1400 (NUREG-75/014), Likhtarev (Health Physics, March 2002, Vol 82) – DOE Turbo FRMAC default Resuspension factor four options: Anspaugh- Health Physics, May 2002,Vol 82, No.5 WASH-1400 (NUREG-75/014) NCRP Report 129 – DOE Turbo FRMAC default Constant Factor Option to calculate avoidable dose (Resuspension and/or Ground Shine) for specified exposure Start Time and Duration
HotSpot 2.07 Plumes can be Mapped in Google Earth • HotSpot plume files can be displayed on Google Earth global maps • HotSpot plume files (.KML), automatically invoke Google Earth and zoom to the user-input Lat/Long and display select contours • Contour options include • General, Fire, and Explosive release models • Dose • Plume passage • Inhalation • Submersion • Ground shine • resuspension • Deposition • Nuclear explosion • Fallout dose and dose rate • Prompt nuclear effects • Blast • Thermal • Ionizing
Hotspot 2.07 Expanded Source Term Description Controllable parameters: • Material at Risk (MAR) • Damage Ratio (DR) • Leakpath Factor (LP) • Airborne Fraction (AF) • Respirable Fraction (RF) • Respirable source term = MAR x DR x LPF x AF x RF
New HotSpot 2.07 Explosion Model • Improved deposition and ground shine estimates in proximity (within a few 100 m) of the detonation point • Users can customize cloud parameters • Vertical source distribution • Scale cloud height calculated using Church formula
Documentation of HotSpot SW Configuration Management Plan and SW Test Plan is Complete
HotSpot User’s Guide/Documentation and on-board Help have been Completed
NA41-Sponsored Hotspot 2.07 Percentile Dose Capability • Site-specific meteorological data can be input into HotSpot for calculation of 95th percentile dose values • Single Met data input file option • 1 – 5 years of sequential hourly data (in MACCS2 code format) • Date/Time • Wind speed • Wind direction or Sector (1-16) • Stability • Possible Future Met data input file options • CAP88 • Met View • Other ? • Output options • Evaluate TED for Each Hourly Observation (EHO) • Intermediary Joint Frequency Distribution (JFD) • 50th, 90th, 95th , 99th ,and 99.5th default percentile dose values for each of the 16-sector radial distances (e.g. site boundary distances). • User-defined percentile values. • Direction independent option, e.g., percentile dose at select radial distances using all sequential hourly wind speed and stability data regardless of wind direction. • This addresses final critical recommendation needed for inclusion of HotSpot in DOE Safety Software Central Registry
Current Input Met Data File is in MACCS2 Format (1-5 years of hourly data)
Optional Joint Frequency Distribution (JFD) for Fast Screening of Current HotSpot Scenario
