  1. The Function Machine A Story Board

  2. Animated Intro • The game begins with an animation. It introduces: • The Function Machine • Our Cool Function Machine Operator • The Main Menu • The animation will excite our 5-6 year old user through the use of appealing colors and sounds.

  3. The Main Menu • User Has Four Options: • Practice • Play • The Creators • Exit

  4. The Function Machine Concept • Each function machine has an input and an output. • User is given an example of an input and output and must determine the type of machine. Examples • a “doubling” machine turns AAA into AAAAAA or ♦♦ into ♦♦♦♦ • a “plus one” machine turns AAA into AAAA or ♦♦ into ♦♦♦♦ • a “minus two” machine turns AAAAA into AAA or ♦♦♦♦ into ♦♦ • machines can operate on numbers, letters or symbols/shapes

  5. Practice Mode • In practice mode, the user can select the kind of machine and then practice filling in the output.

  6. Play Mode • The program will fill in the first input and output automatically. • The process is animated to look the same as when it is performed by the user. • The program will then provide an input and wait for the user to provide the output. • We are still debating whether the user will click the output and it will teleport to the machine or they will manually drag it.

  7. Screen Layout The arrow shows the path that correct answers will follow.

  8. Hint! Hint! • After a user has guessed incorrectly two times, the unnecessary pieces will dim. • Incorrect guesses will fall down below the function machine as a reminder of what didn’t work.

  9. Advancing Levels • Once the right column is full, the user will advance to a new function machine. • With each correct answer, the user will get a star or other visual reminder of success.

  10. How We Keeping It Interesting • Each function machine can have a different operator / background color / component. • A triumphant sound will signal a correct answer.
