Polar Permaculture – Brighter dreams for all Food is one of the basic essential requirements for all living beings, whether plants, animals or human beings. Without food, no one can survive for long and this is why the supply and availability of food is always a concerned subject of people all across the world. To cater to this problem, over the long course of history human beings have developed a system called Permaculture. What is Permaculture? It is a setting under which social and agricultural design principles are centered around to simulate or directly utilize the features and patterns that are present in natural ecosystems. For example, the community is the only single source that provides fresh food over the entire Svalbard Island by using the sustainable composting system, micro-greens lab, and innovative geodesic dome greenhouse. Making Artic self-sufficient Longyearbyen food communities work in harsh conditions and without any proper sustainable system. The objective of this polar permaculture program is to restore the self- sufficiency of the region. The community stock local grocery stores along with restaurants, hotels and private residences having a touch of Arctic. Moreover, the community offers organic vegetables, microgreens, quail eggs and sprouts that deliver uncompromised nutrition with access for all at the fair share pricing. The Longyearbyen food community aims to farm affordable and sustainable food items that are better than frozen foods, which are brought into the region. To again build and make the region self-sufficient, support to the local community is provided and imports are reduced.
