The 2010 Population Census • The 2010 Population Census is the 6th modern population census of Indonesia. The previous Census carried out in 1961, 1971, 1980, 1990 and 2000 • Covering: 88,361 villages at 6,579 sub-district in 497 districts/municipalities in 33 provinces all over Indonesia • Executors: 715,000 trained officers including enumerators (550.000 enumerators, 150.000 team coordinators, and 15.000 field coordinators) • Conducted on: 1-31 May 2010

Criteria of Census Enumerators People who well recognize their area/village, can write standard numbers and characters (scanner read) and the minimum education is senior high school Criteria of Census Supervisor People who well recognize their area/village, can write standard numbers and characters (scanner read) and the minimum education is senior high school with additional can lead the team, and has experience as BPS survey officer are preferable.
Census Publicity • Related to the gender issue, the publicity or campaigned of 2010 PC already involving women, especially Darma Wanita organization (The Civil Servants’ Wives Republic of Indonesia Organization) who campaigned to the traditional markets and distributing recycle bag • The involvement of women based on awareness that most of our respondents are housewife
Objectives of 2010 PC • The 2010 census is designed to meet various data needs, including: • basis for updating population data bases up to the lowest level of administrative unit; • valuable input in monitoring the progress for achieving the millenium development goals (MDG) and other goals; • basis for preparing small area statistics and population projection; • basisfor developing sampling frame for various surveys conducted between 2010-2020; and • basis for developing population registers and population administration sytem.
Questionnaire design • The 2010 census utilize four different forms: • The L1 form is to list the physical structure of the buildings and the living quarters within them. During the listing operation the L form will also be used to collect number of people living in the living quarters. These data will be tallied and summarised upward to national level to obtain the total population by sex to be announced as the preliminary result ofthe censusby mid-August 2010. • The C1 form is to collect housing and household characteristics as well as the characteristics of individual member of the households (asking around 42 questions in total). The final results of the census will be published in August 2011 when the processing of the C forms is completed.
Questionnaire design (cont) • The C2 form is the shortened version of C1, consist of 14 questions for enumerate population in special blocks such as remote areas, the electronic census used by diplomatic personnel, and other difficult households • The L2 form is a listing of persons who are not in recognized households. They include the homeless, the itinerant, ships crewmembers who do not have an onshore official residence
Items collected in the census (using C1 form) • Basic demographic characteristics: sex, age, relationship to head of household, marital status; • Fertility: number of children ever born and still living; • Mortality: including child, adult and maternal mortality; • Migration (district level): place of birth, current residence, place of residence 5 year ago; • Education: schooling status, educational attainment, reading and writing ability;
Items collected in the census (using C1 form) • Socio-cultural: religion, ethnic group, citizenship, ability to speak Indonesian, daily language used at home; • Disability (following UN recommendation); • Employment: economic activity during previous week, main industry, employment status; • Housing: housing ownership, floor area and type, sources of drinking water, fuel for cooking, lighting, toilet facilities; • Usage of ICT
Some considerations in designing census questionnaire • The census questionnaire (i.e., C-Form) has been designed taking into consideration the United Nations recommendations for the 2010 Population and Housing Censuses; the monitoring of the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG); and the experiences in planning and conducting the previous censuses in Indonesia. • The census, using the C form, will collect household information as well as demographic, social and economic variables from each member of the household on the basis of complete enumeration
Selection of Census Supervisor • In the context of Indonesia as an island country and many part of Indonesia identified as remote area, we never insist the target of women to be involved in census supervisor • 0bviously we open the same chance for man and woman to be participated in census

Quality Assurance:Post Enumeration Survey • The activity of 2010 PC take place now is Post Enumeration Survey (PES). PES carried out soon after the census enumeration, scheduled in July 2010. The objective is to provide overall assessment of the quality of the census results. • Instruments and procedures of the PES have been designed to assess the coverage of the census enumeration and the content of the census results. • PES conducted on 1200 census block (CB) all over Indonesia with 1176 PES enumerators
Census Data Analysis • The preliminary count of census result will be released on 17 August 2010 • Webpage will be ready for release on August 16, showing the population trends, comparison with projection, and description of data issues • BPS-statistics Indonesia cooperation with UNFPA have been made grand design for disseminating, analyzing and utilizing data from Indonesia 2010 Population census (Professor Terrence H.Hull as consultant)
Census Data Analysis • Preparing the data documentation, and guidelines for analysis of mayor variables • BPS-statistics Indonesia plans to organize researchers to analyze the census result related to the topics of their own special interest • To support the analysis activities, BPS-statistics Indonesia will produce hundreds of tables freely available to users
Census Data Analysis • Every university population studies also supported to undertake provincial level analysis, but it doesn’t need standardized platform like the last census. Its mean researchers have more independent analysis
Dissemination of The Census Results • Temporary result of the 2010 PC will be announced by the President of the Republic of Indonesia in his state address at the MPR (People’s Consultative Assembly) on August 17, 2010 • The 2010 PC will be disseminated by way of various program involving representatives of the central and regional governments, the private sector, CSOs, national and international development organizations.
