Purpose of Excretory System • The word excretion means the removal of waste substances from the body. • Several organs are involved with the excretory system, including the kidneys, sweat glands, lungs, and rectum. • Excretion is vital to the health of the body. • Other wastes, namely urea, uric acid, & various salts are removed by the kidneys and sweat glands.

  4. Purpose of Excretory System • Liquid waste is removed by the kidneys. Located beside the spine in your back within your ribcage, the kidneys are small bean-shaped organs. • The kidneys filter the wastes from the blood, forming a liquid called urine. • The kidneys funnel the urine from 2 separate tubes called ureters and connect to the bladder. • The bladder stores the urine until muscular contractions force the urine out of the body through the urethra. • Each day, your kidneys produce about 1.5 liters of urine. All of it needs to be removed from your system. This occurs through urination.

  7. Functions of Excretory System Parts • Kidneys: Removes excess water and wastes such as urea and salts from the blood. This fluid is know as urine. • Ureters: Carries urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder. • Urinary Bladder: sack located on the lower ventral body wall between the two umbilical arteries. Stores urine until it is eliminated from the body.
