Use Netiquette What is netiquette? (A.K.A. internet etiquette) The rules on how to properly interact and behave w/others on the internet. Why use netiquette? To help others understand what you are trying to convey, as you are using nonverbal communication.
NetiquetteRules • Use correct spelling/grammar. • Do NOTuse all capital letters. • Double check email addresses before sending. • Keep messages short and to the point. • Proofread all messages. • Respond to messages promptly. • Do not send out spam. • Be respectful and stay professional. • Understand messages can become permanent.
Obey Copyright Laws What is a Copyright? It protects and gives exclusive legal rights For an author/creator of a work to reproduce it (or give others permission to reproduce it). obey Copyright Laws Make sure all copyrighted materials are used correctly in The Classroom (according to fair Use Guidelines.
CopyrightableWorks Copyrightable works can include: • Dramatic works • Musical works • Literary works (e.g. computer software) • Artistic work • Pantomimes • Choreographic work • Motion pictures • Sound recordings • Other creative/intellectual works As you can see…many works can be copyrighted…so BE CAREFUL!
Use Fair Use Guidelines What is meant by the term “fair use?” Fair use allows certain people (e.g. educators) to use parts of copyrighted material.
Avoid Plagiarism What is plagiarism? • The stealing someone else’s work and passing it off as your on. • Not giving credit to a source from which you took information from.
Reason to Avoid Plagiarism Some reasons to avoid plagiarism include: • Fines • Failing a grade/course • Academic probation/suspension • Loosing your job • Lawsuit F
Use Safety on the Web Safety Tips: • Do not give out any personal information! • Always“log out” of public websites. • Do not give out any passwords! • Keep the computer updated (e.g. anti-virus software, firewalls). Stay SAFE!
Use Safety on the Computer • Use a strong, secure, and original password. • Never store your login information. • Lock the computer when not in use (e.g. set the lock screen). • Back up the computer on a daily basis.
