 APA Citation Workshop

Objectives: Use an internal reference both when quoting directly and paraphrasing. Understand how to include multiple authors in an internal citation. Understand how to format a references page and cite the following on it: Book Newspaper Article Website

Quick Review… APA is like MLA in that there’s both internal references and a final references list at the end of the document. APA is also called the “name-date” format of citation. Inclusion of the date in internal citations is one of the main ways that APA differs from MLA. Let’s try a few examples…

Internal Citations SOURCE: The Data Game, by Mark H. Maier. Published in New York in 1999. Data from page 89. How would you cite the following sentences? According to _______________, it costs $25,000 to jail a prisoner for one year. Approximately eight murders are deterred by every legal execution _____________. In ________________ found that the number of rapes reported by women on surveys varies greatly depending on who administers the survey.

How to internally reference… Here are the correct citations: According to Maier (1999), it costs $25,000 to jail a prisoner for one year. Approximately eight murders are deterred by every legal execution (Maier, 1999). In 1999, Maier found that the number of rapes reported by women on surveys varies greatly depending on who administers the survey. Remember that if you are using direct quotes you must include the page number of the text as well. Notice here that there is a coma between the author and the year, this is different than MLA where the page numbers were separated without commas. Notice here that there is a coma between the author and the year, this is different than MLA where the page numbers were separated without commas.

Example of a direct quote… One recent study points out that “women radio news directors have exceeded the men in yearly salary” (Cramer, 1993, p. 161). OR… As Cramer (1993) points out, “Although women radio news directors have exceeded the men in yearly salary, that may not be the case in other radio news positions” (p. 161). Basically what you need to recognize here is that with direct quotes you need three pieces of information: the name, the date and the page. -Also notice that the pages aren’t just listed numerically, they also have a p. to indicate what you’re referring to– there’s different abbreviations in the packet. 8: And the answer is… Nolan, M. (2005, August 31). 3 may go on state’s ‘dangerous school’ list. The Post-Standard, p. A4. Keep in mind that if the article is on discontinuous pages, you must cite all pages. If the article is by the Associated Press, you must cite the article as you would an un-authored piece. - A piece without an author begins with the title– you can abbreviate it, but don’t change the first word and rememeber to only capitalize proper nouns and the first word. - A piece without an author begins with the title– you can abbreviate it, but don’t change the first word and rememeber to only capitalize proper nouns and the first word.

Citing a Book… Using this information, how would we cite this book? Authors: Margaret L. Anderson and Patricia Hill Collins Publisher: Wadsworth (located in California) Date: 2004

The correct citation… Here’s the correct citation: Andersen, M. L., & Collins, P.H. (2004). Race, class, and gender. California: Wadsworth. Notice the initials of the authors and that the year is right after the authors, as opposed to at the end. You’ll see that only the first word in the title is capitalized. Also, notice that the title of the book is italicized as opposed to being underlined.

Keep in mind… An internal citation of this book would have both authors’ names separated by an ampersand: (Andersen & Collins, 2004). If there were three to five authors, you would cite all the first time with an ampersand. In subsequent citations, use the first name and then “et al.” For six or more authors, in all citations use the first name followed by “et al.”

Citing a Website… Please use the following information to cite a website as you would on your references page: Author: Mary McMellen Accessed: September 2, 2005 Title: Closing the Achievement Gap Website: www.nysdoe/mmcmellen/0987 Date: Septemember 7, 2004

How it should look… McMellen, M. (2005). Closing the achievement gap. Retrieved September 2, 2005 from http://www.nysdoe/mmcmellen/0987.htm - Notice that there’s no period after the website and that only the first word is capitalized- Notice that there’s no period after the website and that only the first word is capitalized

What’s wrong with this picture? Shouldn’t say works cited– should say references References should not be underlined References should be centered The list should be alphabetical There should be double spacing There should be hanging indentsShouldn’t say works cited– should say references References should not be underlined References should be centered The list should be alphabetical There should be double spacing There should be hanging indents

Why do I need to know this? APA is used in almost all of the social sciences. It’s likely you’ll take a course in one of these sciences, so it’s best to learn now. APA makes reading papers easier for professors and professionals because it allows them to see how current your sources are and where they’re from all at the same time. We’re confident you can handle this change.
