13. Band-in-a-Box What is it? Band-in-a-Box is an intelligent automatic accompaniment program for a multimedia computer. You can hear and play along to many song ideas and go from “nothing” to “something” in a short period of time. It is easy to use. Just type in the chords to any song, pick a musical style from hundreds available, and click the Play button. It automatically generates a full backing arrangement of piano, bass, drums, guitar, and strings.

What are the practical applications? • Band-in-a-Box can be used as a compositional tool • It can be used to help students practice improvisation when a rhythm section is not readily available • It can be used for ear training • It can be used to study style. There are 161 styles of accompaniment available from basic jazz swing to country to hip-hop, but it will also generate a solo in the style of musicians from John Coltrane to Earl Scruggs!

26. Web Quests WebQuest? A: A teaching Model An inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The model was developed in early 1995 at San Diego State University by Bernie Dodge with Tom March, and was outlined in "Some Thoughts About WebQuests". What are the parts?
