FAMOUS PEOPLE • John Kay - invented the flying shuttle • James Hargreaves - invented the spinning jenny • Richard Arkwright - improved the water frame and opened a spinning mill • Samuel Crompton - invented the spinning mule • Edward Cartwright - invented the power loom • Eli Whitey - invented the cotton gin

  3. ADVANCEMENTS Flying shuttle • Cord mechanism that moved the woof thread more rapidly across the loom • Allowed weavers to weave faster than spinners could on their spinning wheels

  4. ADVANCEMENTS Spinning Jenny • Named after his wife • This machine could produce eight times as much thread as a single spinning wheel

  5. ADVANCEMENTS Water Frame • Spinning machine driven by waterpower. • Was large and expensive– Arkwright opened a spinning mill • Brought workers and machines together in one place to make goods • Created many jobs

  6. ADVANCEMENTS Spinning Mule • Combination of spinning jenny and water frame • Made it possible for a single operator to work more than 1,000 spindles simultaneously. • Allowed many different types of yarn to be produced.
