Chapter 3 Section 1 Reading graphs Plotting points Estimating Values
Warm-up • Solve the following: Give set-builder, interval, and number line
Graphs • A graph is a picture representation of • A function OR • A set of data • Graphs come in many styles • Bar graph • Pie chart • line graph
Questions • How many drinks would a 200lb person have to drink in 1hr to have a 0.08% BAC? • If Steve has a BAC less than 0.08% after drinking 4.5 drinks in 1hr, what can we say about his weight? • Tina has a BAC of 0.10% after just 3 drinks. What can we say about her weight?
Pie Chart - Questions • Roughly how much more popular is apple pie than peach pie? • Name two types of pie that are roughly equally popular. • In both cases, use the chart to identify the answers, not the percentage numbers
Coordinates • Bars and pies are nice for categorical data, but Cartesian coordinates are often far more useful • line graphs • equations (sect 3.2) • Devised by Rene Descartes • use two perpendicular number lines • X and Y axes • each point is given by two numbers (x,y)
Make a graph • Draw a set of coordinates and mark off the following points: • (8,7) • (3,-5) • (-7,-5) • (4,6) • (2,0) • (0,0) • (-3,2)
Some Names • Origin: the point (0,0) • Axis: the number lines • Abscissa: the x-axis value of a point • Ordinate: the y-axis value of a point • Quadrant: each quarter of the graph cut off by the axes • Ordered pair: the two values for a point, in (x,y) order
Battleship • Collaborative Corner, page 174 • Groups of 2 • 10 yes/no questions to find the battleship! • Play 2 rounds; everyone gets to play each part against each other person • If an extra person is in your group, they can double-check
Questions • How long does it take to get to a heart rate of 80BPM? • After how many months is this person’s resting heart rate at a minimum? • What is that minimum heart rate?
Question • What might have happened after month 7?
The Window (page 167) • Text book convention: [Left, Right, Bottom, Top] • So, [-10, 10, -5, 20] looks like what? • Let’s set the WINDOW on our calculator
