  2. Physical therapist assistants are skilled healthcare workers who carry out patient treatment programs under the direction of the physical therapist. Duties of the assistant include: the application of various physical agents (ice, heat, ultrasound and electrical stimulation), massage, gait training and therapeutic exercise to relieve pain and restore function.Treatment includes therapeutic exercises, cardiovascular endurance training, and training in activities of daily living.
