  3. Since yesterday was Valentine’s Day, some of us may have relationships on our minds…Before we talk about relationships, let’s define what a relationship is. Safety Respect Responsibility

  5. What kinds of relationships are there? There are a variety of relationships we can have with other people. There are four basic types of relationships: • Family Relationships • Friendships • Casual Relationships • Romantic Relationships Safety Respect Responsibility

  6. Family Relationship We first learn about loving and caring relationships from our families. Family is defined as a domestic group of people with some degree of kinship – whether through blood, marriage, or adoption. Safety Respect Responsibility

  7. Friendship Everyone needs friends, and you probably have always had at least one. A friend is defined as a person you know well and regard with affection, trust, and respect. Safety Respect Responsibility

  8. Casual Relationships Causal relationships are formed with people you encounter every day – anyone who is not a friend, romantic relationship, or family member. Safety Respect Responsibility

  9. Romantic Relationship In thinking about the different types of relationships, it is important to realize that you can have an intimate relationship with anyone. An intimate relationship is one in which you can truly be yourself with someone who you respect and are respected by in return. It is an emotional connection Safety Respect Responsibility

  11. Communication Conflict Resolution Skills How to Deal with Disagreements 1. Define the problem clearly from both points of view. 2. State what you can agree on. 3. Brainstorm together over all of the possible alternatives to the problem. 4. State what changes each of you is personally willing to make to arrive at a solution. 5.   14. Respect On a practical level respect includes taking someone's feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration. It means taking all of these seriously and giving them worth and value. In fact, giving someone respect seems similar to valuing them and their thoughts, feelings, etc. It also includes acknowledging them, listening to them, being truthful with them, and accepting their individuality.
