Space • serveasareferralunitfortheinfantsborn outside thehospital • Eachinfantshouldbeprovidedwithaminimum areaof100sq.ft.or10m2 • Spaceforpromotionofbreastfeeding
Location • locatedasclosepossibletothelaborroomsand obstetric operationtheatre • shouldnotbelocatedonthetopfloor
BabyCareArea • Areasandroomsforinbornorintramuralbabies, • Examinationarea • Mother’sareaforbreastfeedingandexpression of breastmilk • Nursesstationandchartingarea.
Hand Washing AndGowningRoom • Shouldbelocatedattheentrance. • self closingdoors.
Nurses Stations • Centralarea • Newborn charts, hospital forms, computer terminals,telephonelinesshouldbelocatedin thisarea.
CleanUtilityandSoiled Utility Holding Rooms • Stocking clean utility items and sterile disposables,andfordisposalofdirtylinenand contaminateddisposables.

ENVRONMENTALTEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY • 26-28°Cinordertominimizeeffectofthermal stressonthebabies. • The external windows of nursery should be glazedtominimizeheatgainandheatlossand baby beds should be located at least 2 feet awayfromthewallandwindows.
