Le Louvre - History • Inspired by Francois I collection of twelve Italian paintings. • Actual museum was created by Louis XVI, who opened the Musée de la République on August 10, 1793 • The museum became property of the State in 1848, and annual budgets were targeted to obtaining new masterpieces. • Le Louvre contains more than 300, 000 works of art, including the famous Mona Lisa and the Statue of Venus de Milo.

  4. Le Louvre - Paintings • Le Louvre houses some of the most beautiful paintings in the world. • One of the most famous being the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. • Other famous works of art include ancient artifacts like this mummy covering from 800 b.c.

The Layout of Le Louvre • Le Louvre has three wings: the Sully, the Richelieu, and the Denon. • Each wing has three floors above ground, and one below. • The building is divided into seven sections, Paintings, Objets d’art, Prints and Drawings, Oriental Antiquities, Sculpture, Egyptian Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities

The Pyramid • Built by the American-Chinese born architect Ieoh Ming Pei from 1985 - 1989 • The Pyramid is made from glass and steel • The design caused alot of controversy because it was so modern and contrasted the traditional architecture of the museum. • Utilized as an entrance to the museum, elegantly connecting the art galleries.

Le Centre Pompidou - History • Created in February of 1977 through the former French president Georges Pompidou • The President wanted a center that focused on all types of modern and contemporary art, ranging from sculpture and painting to video and performances. • The center was fully modernized and renovated on January 1, 2000.

Le Centre Pompidou -Architecture • The entire construction and renovation of the building cost 1569 million FF. • The center contains a three level infrastructure which houses technical and administrative spaces • Le Centre has a metallic roof and huge glass and iron superstructure made of seven levels • The utility shafts are attached outside of the building and painted in vivid colors. • The architects were Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Gianfranco Franchini

  13. Le Louvre et Le Centre Pompidou Beaubourg Le Louvre est un grand musée à Paris. C’est intéressant avec beaucoup de tableaux célèbres et sculptures. On y voit la Pyramide célèbre, créée par Ieoh Ming Pei. Au Louvre on peut voir la Joconde et la Vénus de Milo. Le Centre Pompidou Beaubourg est un centre d'art unique à Paris. Son architecture est très moderne. Il était créé par le Président Georges Pompidou en 1977. On doit visiter ces deux centres d’art très importants à Paris pour mieux apprécier la culture française.
