  3. Read the article about the deep sea. As you read, ask yourself, “What is the main idea? What facts and details tell more about the main idea?” Then answer the questions.

  4. The Deep Sea Bottom What is it like at the bottom of the deepest parts of the sea? Human explorers can dive thousands of meters down to the sea floor to find out. But they must stay inside specially designed vehicles. Otherwise, they would be crushed by the enormous pressure of the water above. There is a total darkness in the deep sea. Human explorers must use light to see. At these great depths, the water is usually near freezing. In some spots, however, the water is extremely hot. The hot spots form over cracks in the sea floor. These cracks, or vents, are home to living things never seen anywhere else. Giant clams live here. Their bodies are filled with bacteria. The bacteria make an

  5. outer white covering like a tube. Tube worms live in large groups. Each worm has one end attached to the sea bottom. Tube worms can quickly grow to be longer than one meter. Strange crawling crabs and shrimps also crowd the sea’s vents. Deep- sea octopuses live here as well. Life forms oar not the only strange things at the vents. Black smokers are chimneys that form around some of the hot spots. These chimneys are made of minerals that shoot up from deep inside the earth. Some black smokers are as tall as buildings.
