Fall B Meet - September 27 and Ultra 25 km event Orienteering is a recreational sport involving participants to navigate a set course using a map and compass. A series of checkpoints, or controls, are placed in the woods for participants to find as part of their course. The skills involved are map reading, route choice, compass and fitness skills. Participants start at intervals and timed. The fastest person on the course is the winner! At each event, there are a number of courses to choose from. The shorter the course, the easier it is to complete; primarily walking/running on trails. Great for beginners. The longer the course, the more advanced it is; taking the competitor off trails into the woods. Orienteering maps are highly detailed maps of the terrain usually printed at a scale of 1: 10 000 or 1:15 000. A standard of international symbols and colours are used to denote features found in the terrain. 3 4
