    1. Overview Patient Family Advisory Council PFAC

PFAC requirements are based on the work of the Institute for Family-Centered Care (www.familycenteredcare.org) “PFAC shall advise hospitals on matters including but not limited to: patient and provider relationships, IRBs, QI activities, patient education on safety and quality matters.” “Hospitals adopt and implement policies and procedures to govern PFACs goals, membership, training and roles and responsibilities.” “Hospitals must establish a PFAC no later than 9/1/09 and must report compliance with PFAC requirements to DPH no later than 10/1/09.” “Requires that at least 50% of the PFAC’s members be current or former patients/family members by 12/1/09.” “Requires annual report to DPH describing the work of the PFAC.” Meeting minutes are also required.

Regulations cont. “Roles of the Council may include: participation on hospital committees, task forces and/or advisory boards” “Review of publically reported quality information” “Participation on committees addressing patient safety issues…search committees…reward and recognition committees” “Co-trainers for clinical and non-clinical staff” “Council shall be chaired or co-chaired by a current or former patient or family member no later than 12/1/09”

To maintain the vitality of our commitments to patients and families, we recognize the importance of including patients and families in designing and improving hospital operations, policies and care delivery
