  8. What is ZigBee? ‘ZigBee’ means two things: A global alliance of companies, founded in 2002: Promoters (15 including Ember), Participants (including Telegesis) and Adopters (totaling over 280) 2. A global specification for interoperable, low-cost wireless device communication The latest release is the ZigBee PRO feature set – fully self healing, mesh networking radio technology

  9. Promoter Members

  10. Why choose ZigBee? • Instant access to multiple suppliers of compliant radios and software stacks. • Currently 19 ZigBee Compliant Platforms available from 15 vendors – “platform” being stack & chip combination • Benefit from efforts of multiple suppliers to establish interoperable standard • Allow end user to focus on their application development and not items such as security services, network routing, commissioning tools, etc.

  11. Star vs Meshing ZigBee Wi-Fi,Bluetooth,GSM

  12. ZigBee – The Technology Comparing ZigBee with other Wireless Standards

  13. Wireless Network Technology INTERNET/AUDIO COMPRESSED VIDEO TEXT MULTI-CHANNEL DIGITAL VIDEO ZigBee 802.11b 802.15.3/WIMEDIA Range over 1.5Km with PA module 802.11a/HL2 & 802.11g SHORT < RANGE > LONG Bluetooth 2 Bluetooth1 LOW < ACTUAL THROUGHPUT > HIGH

  14. ZigBee PRO Network 1 Co-ordinator /FFD Routers/FFDs Sleepy End Device/RFD Under ZigBee PRO the co-ordinator establishes a PAN ID and nodes within range effect joining

  15. ZigBee PRO Network 2 Co-ordinator /FFD Routers/FFDs Sleepy End Device/RFD As routers join a ZigBee PRO network they mesh with each other

  16. ZigBee PRO Network 3 Co-ordinator /FFD Routers/FFDs Sleepy End Device/RFD End devices do not typically play an active role in networks – being asleep most of the time

  17. ZigBee PRO Network 4 Co-ordinator /FFD Routers/FFDs Sleepy End Device/RFD The resulting network is very robust and reliable

  18. ZigBee PRO Network 5 Co-ordinator /FFD Routers/FFDs Sleepy End Device/RFD Assume a routing node is damaged or lost from the network

  19. ZigBee PRO Network 6 Co-ordinator /FFD Routers/FFDs Sleepy End Device/RFD Note that loss of a node is not catastrophic in most ZigBee PRO networks and may not adversely affect the network at all

  20. ZigBee PRO Network 7 Co-ordinator /FFD Routers/FFDs Sleepy End Device/RFD Nodes will seek alternative data paths back to the co-ordinator. This process is continuous with ZigBee PRO allowing for a changing radio environment within a network

  21. Typical ZigBee PRO set-up End devices, usually battery powered Routers, usually mains powered Mesh Link Star Link Co-ordinator /FFD Router/FFD Sleepy End Device/RFD Co-ordinator Mixed Star and Mesh topologies

  22. Summary of Main ZigBeeFeatures • Supports large number of nodes • Easy to deploy • Multiple vendors • Very long battery life • Secure (128 bit encryption) • Reliable and self healing • Low cost • Can be used globally (2.4GHz)

  24. Recent ZigBee market growth predictions In-Stat, expects 120 million ZigBee chipsets will be sold in 2011, used mostly in a combination of routers, end points and gateways. There will be 120 million ZigBee devices by 2010. Most analysts are predicting significant growth for ZigBee silicon. A mid-range estimate is that this market will be worth a billion dollars between 2008 and 2010.

  25. Smart Energy & Home Automation ZigBee technology can be used to produce effectively proprietary solutions to applications or to produce products that are compatible or interoperable with other like products in the market place. To carry the ZigBee logo and be fully interoperable you need to base your application on a public profile. On the ZigBee PRO feature set a number of Public Profiles will be available. These already include the Smart Energy and Home Automation profiles. More public profiles are coming soon…Commercial Building Automation, Telecom Applications, Personal Home Health Care

  27. ZigBee® Applications

  28. Collecting and sending data • ZigBee module wakes & sends temperature level readings at fixed intervals • Set to alarm & send data when readings breach permitted range GSM Mobile GPRS Data ZigBee wireless link

  29. View data remotely via Internet

  30. Alarm notification • E-mail sent to designated person • SMS message sent to mobile phone Application Design: Comtech Limited

  31. ZigBee applications • Used to monitor pressure/temperature at the well head • Intrinsically Safe sensors use ZigBee technology to transmit well head readings from Hazardous Area to a safe area • Sensors are used for both permanent and temporary installations where the very quick deployment times save valuable rig time Application by Wireless Measurement Ltd.

  32. ZigBee applications • Industrial Valve Control: • Using ZigBee wireless to control the actuated and manual valves • Sugar factory at average ambient temperatures of over 45°C • Stainless steel plant with reinforced concrete floors • Rodent attacks on cable housings meant high failure rate on cabled control system • In this harsh environment ELTAV achieved 100% packet success with ZigBee Application by ELTAV Wireless Monitoring Ltd.

  33. ZigBee applications • Temperature monitoring in commercial kitchens: • Temperature sensors mounted onto powered FFD ZigBee modules send regular readings via their network to a PC based in the supervisors office • This data is stored on site and sent via landline to a server where the data is backed up and used to update a website where all the kitchens in the chain can be continuously monitored Application by Monika

  34. ZigBee applications • Cold Chain temperature monitoring: • Sensors are installed in the refrigerated trailers for temperature controlled haulage • Temperature data and trailer identity are transmitted to the tractor unit where GPRS technology relays cargo temperature, engine management data, and GPS location to a web server • Goods accepted or rejected before the trailer doors are opened saving valuable time and increasing confidence in cold chain integrity Application by Wireless Measurement Ltd.

  35. ZigBee applications • Operating & managing hotel safes: • By creating a powered backbone of Full Function ZigBee devices along hotel corridors a stable mesh network is created • Reduced Function devices are attached to the keypads of the safes in each hotel bedroom • These devices are activated when the customer keys in the safe code and a signal is sent from the module to reception via the network so that a charge can be levied Application by Hotech Edge Ltd.

  36. ZigBee applications • Operating & managing hotel mini-bars: • The NuvoPro system can be retrofitted on almost any existing mini-bar in the industry • Designed to reduce pay roll costs by up to 50% compared to manual procedure • RFD in mini-bar triggered when customer uses the bar and signal sent via wireless back bone to administrative centre Application by Atlantic Minifridge Ltd.

  37. ZigBee applications • plogg is a fully certificated metering device that monitors the power consumption of the devices plugged into it. • plogg can also act as a router in a ZigBee network collecting and circulating data from sensors monitoring light levels, ambient temperature readings, motion etc. Application by Energy Optimisers Ltd.

  38. Meter reading - Moscow Telegesis modules are being deployed in a city wide water metering project in the apartment blocks of Moscow Russia has a very different supply model to the rest of Europe. Hot water is made in factories all over Moscow - then pumped under the streets into the apartments Previously offered as a free service by Government there was no need for a domestic metering infrastructure

  39. Meter reading - Moscow To meter apartment use of hot water for heating and washing the authorities are fitting a ZigBee enabled metering system To date Telegesis has supplied over 200,000 ETRX2 and ETRX2-PA modules to the project with an eventual requirement for millions

  40. Meter reading - Moscow ETRX2 – PA modules form powered network backbone down to basement data sink connected to the main office via Ethernet ETRX2 standard modules fitted in every apartment Full case study is published on the Telegesis website
