Edo Japan simulation Welcome to Ancient Japanese Society! You’re going to love it!
introduction • Welcome to Edo Period Japan! You are all now responsible members of Japans feudal society in the time of the Shogun rule • You have all been assigned to a specific societal group that existed during the Edo period; this includes Daimyo, Farmers and Fishermen, Eta, and even some lowly non-human Hinin • For the next 3 CLASSES you will be responsible for performing all of the “duties” a member of your social class would perform on a daily basis. • This includes things that need to be done every day (such as going fishing for fishermen), and little projects that will need to be finished by the end of the 3 classes (such as a poster explaining the Bushido Code for Samurai)
Introduction • At the end of the three day simulation you and the rest of your group will prepare a short presentation on your specific social class. • Presentation can be in the format of your choice (skit, advertisement, powerpoint, etc) • You will have 1-2 classes to prepare the presentations, and then everyone present the following day • Now, lets us reveal which social group you will be apart of for the next few days!
Your emperor and shogun • EMPEROR: Ms. Yurchuk • SHOGUN: Ms. Wells
Daimyo’s • Congratulations! You are the lucky few, the war lords of your own domains, controlling everyone in your territory, and answering only to the Shogun! • Jeffrey Iyogun • Aliyah Socan
Samurai’s • Warm welcome to the Samurai, the noble warriors, driven by honor and the virtues of the Bushido code! • Alex Gomez • Mia Ngam-Fawcett
farmers • And now we welcome the privileged farmers. The ones responsible for our most important resource. Rice! Certainly we would fall apart without your valuable contributions to society • Elma Anamali • Tomte Meyer • Aidan Arguelles • Sofia Rosales
fishermen • Welcome to the “as-equally-as-important-to-society-as-farmers” Fishermen! Your hard work inspires all of us, and we thank you for providing us with your valuable services • NanneteBete • Norbert Samson • Shia Garcia • Evan Becker
artisans • Next up we have the under-rated Artisans, or “towns people”, your subtle contributions to our daily lives are greatly appreciated • Hanna Mazalo • Dana Fernandez-Hernandez • William Thoms
merchants • Our masters of the economy! Making money while putting in almost no effort themselves! Our entrepreneurs and business genius’, welcome to our humble domain! • James Lumindas • RizDevji • Steve Mugabo
eta • Every society needs some one to take care of the corpses. Let us welcome the unfortunately necessary Outcasts! • Czarina Estella • Daniela Andreoli Rojas
hinin • Also there’s these non-humans… • Jayson Nolasco • Vlad Moldovan
Lets get started! • Step 1: Move into your social groups and get to know each other, as you will be working very closely together for the next 6-7 classes. • Step 2: Your honorable Shogun is going to hand out your groups information sheets next class. They provide a little bit of background on your specific social group, and outline exactly what you can expect to be doing over the next 3 classes. • Step 3: Get ready to enter this classroom next class as Edo citizens, ready to do their duty!
