Whether you require routine cleanings and exams, restorative treatments like fillings or crowns, or cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening or veneers, we have the expertise and technology to deliver outstanding results. When it comes to dental care, it’s easy to fall into a routine and forget to improve it. But remember, your adult teeth are irreplaceable, and taking care of them is essential. Here is my simple step-by- step guide to maintaining healthy teeth and gums at home: 1. Floss: Use floss or a water flosser to clean between your teeth and along the gum line. Slide the floss gently between your teeth and wrap it around each tooth in a C-shape, then move it up and down to remove plaque and food particles. If you’re using a water flosser, aim the stream of water between your teeth and along the gum line to remove debris over a sink or in the shower. Flossing once daily is recommended, but it is even better after each meal. But let’s be realistic: once a day will suffice; do it at night before bed. Remember that when you don’t floss and only brush, you only clean 60% of each tooth.
2. Brush Your Teeth: Use a toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth thoroughly for at least two minutes twice daily. Brush in circular motions, and brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces. Do not skip brushing before bed, leading to cavities and tooth decay. I understand it’s challenging to leave your warm, comfy bed, but make yourself get up and go to your bathroom. Think of it like this: you wouldn’t leave last night’s dinner out on the counter all night and still eat it in the morning. So don’t leave the leftovers in your mouth, between the teeth, to meditate in your mouth while you’re sleeping. That’s why we see so many cavities. 3. Consider switching to an electric toothbrush for better results. It can prevent you from brushing too hard and damaging your gums. Most electric toothbrushes have a timer, so you can brush for a full two minutes. Look for a toothbrush that is ADA-approved. 4. Tongue Scraper: Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria or debris from your tongue. Gently scrape your tongue from back to front, rinsing the scraper between each pass. Complete this step over your sink. A tongue scraper is an excellent addition to any oral health routine. It can improve your breath and prevent cavities and tooth decay. 5. Mouthwash (optional): Mouthwash is optional, but if you choose to use it, wait 15-20 minutes after brushing and swish it around your mouth for 30-60 seconds. Choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride to protect your teeth against cavities. 6. Visit Your Dentist Regularly: Remember to schedule and attend regular dental cleanings with your dentist. Preventative care is usually covered by insurance, so take advantage of it to avoid costly dental procedures in the future. By seeing a dentist regularly, you can get ahead of any potential dental issues. Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is crucial for your overall health and well-being. Remember, prevention is better than cure. By following these simple steps and making them a part of your daily routine, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy for years.
