How Can I Provide Breast Cancer Survivor Support? Breast cancer leaves behind physical scars, as well as many unseen, emotional scars. Even after treatment, women and their families are left with completely altered lives. The emotional, spiritual, and physical toll taken by breast cancer makes it all the more important to provide your loved one with breast cancer survivor support. Way to Support Breast Cancer Survivors There are various ways to give support during breast cancer treatment and thereafter. If you know a woman with breast cancer and would like to show your support but don’t know how, here are some ideas to help her through the battle. Actively Listen Active listening can show your loved one you are here and that you care. Instead of offering immediate solutions, allow her to speak about her concerns and emotions without interrupting. Allowing her to talk freely without judgment is a great way to provide her with breast cancer emotional support. Support Her Family A woman’s battle with breast cancer also significantly impacts her family. Women with breast cancer may worry if the needs of their families are being met while they are in treatment. As such, check in with her family to show that you care. It may also be beneficial to offer practical ways to support the family, such as taking the kids out for fun activities or running errands. Recommend Cancer Support Groups Oklahoma City Women battling breast cancer can benefit from being in a community of other survivors. If your loved one is not already a part of a support group, recommend attending a group with her. Support groups allow women to share their stories and receive breast cancer survivor support with others who understand what they are going through. Point to Other Resources Breast cancer is a frightening diagnosis, and the uncertainties it causes may lead to even more emotional stress. If your loved one has vocalized any concerns with you, point her to various resources to help her navigate through the uncertainties. Many digital resources are available through support groups, breast cancer organizations, cancer centers, and hospitals.
