Microscopes for Biological Research The human eye is pretty great. You can see a whole lot of stuff without the need of much help when you are young. Some people require some corrective lenses to help them see, but we can see a lot on our own. That said, there is stuff that we are not seeing too. I was recently listening to someone debunking the flat earth theory and they brought up the fact that many flat earth believers assume it is such because they can’t see otherwise. He brought up the fact that you can’t see a sneeze, but you trust in germs enough to cover your mouth and not get in the line of fire when someone is sneezing. How do we know germs even exist? That might be the next question from a conspiracy nut like this. Well, we know because we are actually able to see germs, just not on our own. Scientists commonly use microscopes as a tool to see what we would usually not be able to see. Here are just a few things to know about microscopes and using them for research.
What Are They For? Starting off, the use of microscopes is pretty simply to see things that are too small for the eye to pick up. There are usually multiple settings on the microscope that can change the amount of magnification, so you can choose to see closer or further away. There might be small details that you want to see hyper-magnified or others that you would rather avoid all of the detail on. The way that it all works is that you simply place your eye on the viewfinder and look through to see what is underneath. You can move it around by physically moving the slide under the lens. The Difference Between Magnifying Glasses and Microscopes When you are trying to make thing go from looking small to looking big, there are two tools that you can use, but they are entirely different. A magnifying glass is typically a handheld device used to magnify things at a low level. Microscopes take you way closer in and require more physical setup to get going. If you are just trying to see a small thing that you would normally see, but in more detail, like an ant, a magnifying glass works. If you want to go deeper, you need a microscope. How Much Do They Cost? One of the reasons that you might choose to go to a lab to use their microscopes instead of using one of your own is the price. For a scientific microscope, it might run you over one thousand dollars and that is on the cheap end. They can go for two to five thousand and even up to eight for some of the best. It is a much smarter idea to use the ones that are provided to you by an institution if you have access to that setting because the price of doing it yourself is often too astronomical.
